Bach the Mathematician

Pythagoras the Musician

Bach was the Champion of the 'Well-Tempered' keyboard - a new system of even-tempering or tuning which allowed music to be played in all keys without having to retune the keyboard. The calculations involve some tricky ratios and approximations, but have since become the standard.

Before him, Pythagoras demonstrated that the notes of the scale corresponded to simple fractions relative to the first note. He knew about how much to shorten a string in order to pluck a higher note.
